Baar, north of the town of Zug is circled in a wide arc by the small river Lorze flowing from the Ägerisee into the Zugersee. A visit to the Höllgrotten, a stalagmite and stalactite cave complex in wild, romantic Lorzentobel is well worthwhile.

In summer the narrow, forested Lorzentobel is popular for shady hikes and bike tours. The entrance to the Höllgrotten is in the middle of the Lorzentobel: the caves with various caverns, small lakes and countless stalagmites and stalactites were discovered at the end of the 19th century during excavation of tuff (volcanic rock). Today they are illuminated and easy to walk through.

Some worthwhile sights in Baar are the Catholic and Protestant churches, the St Wendelin pilgrimage church from 1594 in the centre of Allenwind, the attractive late Gothic early-baroque timber-framed Rathaus (town hall) from 1674 and the Friedhofskapelle St. Anna from 1508 with a carved wooden ceiling and interesting Dance of Death fresco.

The Baarburg is worth seeing: almost geometrical in shape, the plateau-like knoll near the entrance to Lorzentobel, east of Baar has continued to inspire fantasy: an enormous hoard of gold waits to be discovered in secret shafts and as yet unknown caves in the Baarburg, or so legend would have it. But digging for this gold would bring disaster upon the entire village of Baar and so remains forbidden...

A detour to the Zugersee is rewarding, whether for a lake cruise or a refreshing swim, e.g. at one of the bathing coves at the Lorze Delta. Other nearby excursion destinations are the town of Zug and the Zugerberg.
