Coppet

The tiny town of Coppet lies on Lac Léman, just a few kilometres from Geneva. Medieval centre and proud castle. With numerous villas and detached properties, Coppet is primarily a commuter town for the business centre of Geneva.
The tiny municipality of Coppet at the southernmost tip of Canton Vaud enjoys a privileged position on the shore of Lac Léman, a few kilometres north-east of Geneva. The historic centre of Coppet is surrounded by green belt. Villas line up one after the other along the lake shore; there’s no talk of public access to the lake here. There are also many newer quarters with detached properties and villas on the outskirts of the municipal area. Thanks to its lovely location on Lac Léman, Coppet has grown into a residential community in recent decades. Most of its salary earners are commuters who work mainly in Geneva.

Historic Coppet has a medieval townscape with numerous arcaded houses dating from the 16th century. The Protestant parish church is the former convent church of a Dominican cloister founded in 1490. The Gothic building was constructed in 1500 and houses an ornately carved choir from the 16th century. The Maison Michel, a late-Gothic building, is now home to the local museum.

Coppet Castle was built in 1767 on the site of a previous medieval building. The horseshoe-shaped castle is open to visitors (rooms also available for hire) and houses a wealth of furniture from the 18th and 19th centuries and also important portraits. Coppet achieved European fame under Germaine de Staël, who held gatherings of high-ranking personalities at the castle during the Napoleonic era.

Highlights

  • Coppet Castle – the horseshoe-shaped building from the 18th century is in the middle of a French-style park. Open to visitors and rooms available to hire for events.
  • Coppet old town – medieval townscape with many 16th century arcaded houses.
  • Lakeside position - ... but only for the fortunate few. Coppet’s lakeside area is occupied by a continuous line of expensive villas.
