The opening of the Lonza works transformed Gampel into the first industrial municipality in Canton Valais. Gampel has lots of unspoilt natural beauty and diversity to offer.

The first written mention of Gampel is in records dating back to 1238. It was originally a farming village that belonged to the regional capital of Leuk until it became a parish in its own right. The opening of the Lonza industrial works in 1897 transformed Gampel into the first industrial municipality in Canton Valais.

The municipality’s territory encompasses traditional vineyards, flower-filled meadows, alp pastures and forests. Rare species of flowers and birds can be found here as well as ibex, chamois, deer and roe deer. 66 types of bird breed here, 21 of which are on the list of endangered species. Gampel has become famous in recent years for its annual open air rock and pop concert.

A cableway from Gampel gives access to the small resort of Jeizinen, a holiday and winter ski area between 1700 and 2200 metres altitude.
