Landquart

Landquart at the «gateway» to Canton Graubunden is first and foremost a traffic hub on the way into the Graubunden holiday region. However, the small town, Marschlins Castle and others castles in the region are worth an in-between stop.
Landquart owes its existence to the building of the railway and is an important traffic hub and industrial site in the municipality of Igis in the Churer Rheintal north of Chur. Located between the Rhine Valley and Prättigau, Landquart has excellent transport connections with transfer possibilities to SBB (SFR) lines and Rhaetian Railway (RhB) to Klosters - Davos and the Lower Engadine.

Its position directly at the gateway to the Graubunden Alps was of considerable importance for Landquart’s economic boom and it remains a seat of industry in the flat valley plain. One sightseeing attraction at Igis-Landquart is the former moated Marschlins Castle, built near the eastern flank of the valley in the 13th century in Savoyan style i.e. a regular rectangular layout with four towers. The interior has three sumptuously furnished rooms. The Bündner Herrschaft, the most northern corner of Graubunden, lies immediately north of Igis/Landquart. The small holiday and winegrowing region, with Maienfeld as its centre, stretches along the eastern side of the Rhine to the border with the Principality of Liechtenstein. It was the Bündner Herrschaft which 120 years ago inspired Johanna Spyri to write her world bestseller «Heidi». And actually it’s not the inhabitants of the region who are called «Herrschäftler», but the excellent wines.

Further sights worth seeing at Landquart are Falkenstein Castle and St. Fidelis Church. The valley plain at Landquart is popular with cyclists and inline skaters.

Highlights

  • Landquart is a transfer point – here routes divide towards Chur and towards Prättigau and Davos. And via the Vereina railway tunnel (vehicle transport), Landquart is also a branch off to the Lower Engadin.
  • Marschlins moated castle – its square tower forming a donjon is the exterior landmark of the rectangular complex.
  • Bündner Herrschaft - although Landquart does not actually belong to the Bündner Herrschaft, it is the southern gateway to this wine region.
