Rüeggisberg

Rüeggisberg lies in the Gantrisch foothills of the Bernese Alps, between Gürbetal und Schwarzenburgerland. The most impressive landmark is the mighty priory ruin. As a place of power, it is visited by people hiking on the Route of St James and day trippers.
The former Cluniac Priory with its large Romanesque basilica and several ancillary buildings was the first settlement in a German-speaking region by the powerful order of monks from French Cluny. It was built in the 11th century on the southernmost tip of the Längenberg, on a jutting spur with impressive long-distance views. The priory was an important lodging place and refuge for pilgrims travelling the long Route of St James to Santiago de Compostela in north-west Spain. Today the number of walkers on the Route of St. James is increasing again but now overnight stops are usually made in comfortable guest houses.

As well as the village of Rüeggisberg with its typical Bernese farmhouses, another eleven hamlets belong to the municipality, often called «Hinterfultigen» in local dialect. Here are found two Maillart bridges from 1932/1933, regarded as masterpieces of reinforced concrete construction because of their futuristic shape.

The Gantrisch region is laced with countless hiking and biking routes. A favourite Rüeggisberg excursion destination is the Bütschelegg with a restaurant and panoramic views from the Bernese Alps to the Jura. Hikers and day-trippers love to spend time at the Rudolf von Tavel memorial with views of the Gürbetal, Aaretal, Thunersee and Alps.

In winter, children use the hill at the Tavel memorial for sledging. More serious winter sport is practised on the nearby Gurnigel (skilifts, attractive cross-country skiing area).

Highlights

  • Seilpark Gantrisch (Ropepark) in Rüschegg-Eywald - see the world from a squirrel’s perspective: the more daring can climb up to 35 metres above the ground.
