Formerly a mere transit location between Chur and Tiefencastel, Lenzerheide, located at an altitude of 1500 metres above sea level in a high valley, has been a popular winter and summer health resort for families and sports enthusiasts for some time now. Tiefencastel lies in the Albulatal Valley at an intersection of important Graubunden traffic routes and on the Albula Railway line. Its location makes Tiefencastel the departure point for many excursions, e.g. to the Parc Ela, a nature park to which Tiefencastel forms the gateway on the valley side.

Filisur is located in the Albulatal valley at the junction of the Albula and Davos lines of the Rhaetian Railway. The local landmark is the world-famous Landwasser viaduct. The area is also known for the nearby Preda to Bergün sledge run.

The unspoilt alpine village of Bergün lies at the foot of the Albula Pass at the gateway to the Engadine. You do not have to be a railway historian to be amazed by the Albula railway line, which is still maintained in its entirety in almost its original condition, 100 years after its construction. Divided into two parts by the River Inn, the tiny picturesque, Upper Engadine village of La Punt Chamues-ch sits at the foot of the Albulapass. It boasts beautiful Engadine farmhouses and patrician dwellings from the 16th and 17th centuries as well as attractive churches.

S-chanf, with its Engadine houses, lies in Upper Engadine on the River Inn and is an ideal departure point for visits to the National Park: the nearby Val Trupchun is considered to be the area with the most abundant wildlife in Europe. The picturesque Engadine village of Zernez is the gateway to the Swiss National Park, Switzerland’s biggest nature preserve measuring 172 square kilometres and featuring a fascinating wilderness which provides a habitat for a great many Alpine animals and plants. Lavin lies on the valley floor in the Lower Engadine, on the River Inn on the way from Zernez to Scuol. It is linked to the Prättigau by the 19-km-long Vereina railway tunnel. The village is a popular departure and arrival point for wonderful hikes.

The San Bernardino Pass links the Posterior Rhine in Grisons to the north with the Misox valley, also in Grisons, to the south. Not far from the top of the pass is the little resort of San Bernardino with its many opportunities for hiking and winter sports. For eastern Switzerland, the Bernardino route is an alternative to the Gotthard Pass as a way into the Ticino.

Roveredo (GR) is near Bellinzona at the lowest part of the southern Graubunden Valle Mesolcina (Misox). A short distance up valley, another Graubunden valley, Val Calanca, branches off. Roveredo is at the intersection of the cantons of Graubunden and nearby Ticino.
