Albulapass – UNESCO World Heritage

One of Switzerland’s best-kept engineered roads from the 19th century leads over the Albulapass. It is accompanied by the imposing structures of the Rhaetian Railway. In 2008 this became only the third railway in the world to be listed as a UNESCO World Heritage.

Forlorn fortress in the Inn valley

The forlorn Finstermünz bridge fortress lies on the ancient, disused long-distance trail over the Reschenpass. It once guarded a busy route and provided shelter for travellers. Today it lies in Sleeping-Beauty slumber waiting to be reawakened.

San Bernardino Pass – once a mule trail

The San Bernadino Pass is one of the most important transit routes in the Swiss road network. Very different routes and roads have developed over the years, from paths along pack-animal trails to the modern basis tunnel.

Splügen Pass trade route

The mule track from Thusis via Sils to Splügen was part of the Graubunden «Untere Strasse», transit route. It continues over the Splügenpass to Chiavenna and until 1818 this was the only way to cross the pass.

The Alte Schin – a deep, dreadful ravine

A perilous detour along the rugged flank of the Schinschlucht ravine was the only passage until the modern road was built. The old path ran high above the ravine and traversing it was not for the faint-hearted.
